Why should you start writing?

I first started writing when I was 12 - having bought my own A4 notepad and filled it with a story that managed to be a cross between the dragon riding in 'How to Train Your Dragon,' and the training games of 'Enders Game.'

Whilst it wasn't my best work, having been written by a younger me, it got me here so it was worth it. I then went to write on and off until now, only recently having finished the first draft of a full-length novel. Before that, it had only been short stories.

I am proud of myself. It has taken me a while - but that doesn't matter. What really makes a difference is that I now know that it is a possibility for me. I can finish writing novels. The task, in my mind, doesn't seem as much of a mountain as it used to be.

It most likely will never get published (although that won't stop me trying,) but I will keep writing. This is because of one thing:

I enjoy it.

✨Why people write

People beat each other up, telling them that 'being published will never happen.' I am in two minds towards this statement.

1. If you work your arse off - you may get there. Don't let others tell you to stop before you have even started.
2. Also, it is okay to not make writing a career. If you enjoy it, then continue doing it for your sake. It is a great skill to have to be able to write.

Writing is great. Not only is it a form for expressing yourself, but it lets you tell the stories that you wish to see. You can get across a message that you think should be talked about more. It is also entertainment - for you, your friends, your family, or your children.

If you are debating about getting into writing, whether it is in the aim of being a published author or for enjoyment (or both at the same time,) all I can say is to do it. I can't recommend it enough.

Now.

I get it, you have seen online to plan out your plot and set all the details on paper before you start writing. I am like that too. For me, I like to thoroughly outline my plot and then briefly go over the characters too.

This doesn't have to be the case for you, however. There are reasons that there are different 'methods' for writing. Everyone has their own unique ways of going about it. And for someone just starting - just write. get something down, and keep going.

I believe that the only way to find your voice and improve is to start writing. Act - then think later. Not the advice you would use for other aspects of life, but here it is the best. Just write and then fine-tune later.

Writing is a skill that can lead to success, enjoyment, and many other things. I love it - I have done it since I was that little 12-year-old boy who wrote his silly little dragon book. So, if you too want to get into writing - I support you. Pick an idea and just get out there and start writing. What could go wrong?
